Trump resumed federal executions in his first term as president from 2017 to 2021 after a nearly 20-year hiatus.

Newly elected US President Donald Trump has promised to direct the Justice Department to pursue the death penalty. The Hill reported this on Tuesday, December 24.

“As soon as I take office, I will direct the Department of Justice to aggressively pursue the death penalty to protect America’s families and children from violent rapists, murderers and monsters. We will once again be a nation of laws and arrangement,” he wrote on his Truth Social account.

The publication notes that Trump’s statement came a day after current US President Joe Biden announced on December 23 that the sentences of 37 of the 40 prisoners awaiting death on the federal death row would be commuted. They were given life sentences. The only two known shooters who carried out massacres in churches and synagogues, as well as one of the brothers responsible for the Boston Marathon bombing, did not have their sentences commuted.

Trump communications director Stephen Chung called Biden’s decision “abhorrent” and a “slap in the face” to the victims’ families.

“President Trump stands up for the rule of law, which will return when he returns to the White House,” Chung added.

Trump famously resumed federal executions in his first term as president from 2017 to 2021 after a nearly 20-year hiatus.

Biden, who ran for president as an opponent of the death penalty, suspended federal executions after taking office in January 2021.

The death penalty in the United States is a legal punishment in 27 states. But eight states have imposed different moratoriums. There is a moratorium on the death penalty in federal law starting in 2021. US military law also provides for execution, but it was last carried out in 1961.

Trump has previously said that Mexico and Canada could join the United States instead of receiving subsidies.

Trump also threatened Panama with the removal of the Panama Canal if the country does not stop charging what he considers excessive fees.

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, against the backdrop of a discussion in Russia about lifting the moratorium on the death penalty, said that the Russian Orthodox Church does not condemn this type of punishment, because Jesus It is supposed to be Christ himself. do not condemn the death penalty.
