Donald Trump is threatening to take away the Panama Canal and buy Greenland.
The United States built the Panama Canal in 1920 and handed over full control of it in 1999. It accounts for 2.5% of global maritime trade, and in a year up to 14 thousand ships pass through it.
Now Trump has criticized tariffs for using the channel, and also said that China influences its operation. So if Panama does not comply with “moral and legal” principles, the United States will demand the return of the canal – “quickly and without questions.”
Congratulations to the United States Canal,” Trump captioned an AI-generated image of the Panama Canal with an American flag fluttering in the wind.
Trump also returned to the topic of purchasing Greenland from Denmark. In announcing the nomination of the new US ambassador to the country, Trump said that ownership and control of Greenland is “an absolute necessity for the security of the entire world.” Previously, Denmark refused to buy Trump the island.
Back in 2019, Trump toyed with the idea of buying Greenland, which belongs to Denmark. But then Danish politicians said Trump should forget this idea.
The renewed interest in Greenland is also due to the fact that Trump recently stated that Canada should become the 51st US state.
