The US Navy guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg shot down an F/A-18 fighter jet over the Red Sea.

Two American pilots were shot down over the Red Sea as a result of “friendly fire.” This is reported by the Associated Press in connection with the US Central Command (CENTCOM).

It was noted that the F/A-18 Super Hornet, based on the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, was accidentally hit by the missile cruiser USS Gettysburg from the same strike group. Both pilots ejected in time and were rescued, although one sustained minor injuries.

“The guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg, part of the USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group, mistakenly fired at an F/A-18 fighter and hit it,” Central Command said.

CENTCOM noted that US forces have previously shot down drones and missiles launched by the Houthis, posing an ongoing threat. Rushing into decisions under high pressure is likely to lead to this mistake.

The publication writes that the damage to the American fighter underscores how dangerous the Red Sea corridor has become due to the ongoing attacks on shipping by the Iran-backed Houthis.

Let’s remember that earlier the Pentagon said that the Yemeni Houthis have been able to demonstrate the significant capabilities of their military arsenal for six months.
