A German court has arrested a Saudi Arabian citizen who drove into a crowd at a Christmas market in Magdeburg. Investigators have not yet determined the attacker’s motive.
DW writes that on the night of Sunday, December 22, the Magdeburg police reported that the court, at the request of the prosecutor’s office, issued an arrest warrant for Taleb Al Abdulmohsen, who drove a car at full speed into visitors of the Christmas market.
The court ordered the 50-year-old suspect to be placed in a pre-trial detention cell on charges of five counts of murder, as well as attempted murder and causing bodily harm in a large number of cases. Police have released information about five victims of the attack. This is a nine-year-old boy, as well as women 52, 45, 75 and 67 years old.
According to the head of the Federal Criminal Police Office, Holger Münch, the motive of the attacker cannot yet be established with one hundred percent certainty. However, despite the method of committing the crime, there are still no signs that this is an Islamist terrorist attack, he said on ZDF television.
The head of the Federal Criminal Police Office indicated that the German Prosecutor General’s Office has not yet made a decision on how to classify Al Abdulmohsen’s actions. At the same time, Munch confirmed that the suspect was hostile to Islam and was involved in right-wing extremist platforms. However, it cannot yet be said definitively that the crime was politically motivated, he emphasized.
Let us remind you that among the victims of the attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg there is a citizen of Ukraine born in 1972, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said.
She is in serious condition in one of the German clinics. The Ukrainian Embassy in Germany and our consuls are in connection with the clinic and provide the necessary assistance. We hope for a speedy recovery of our citizen,” the department said in a statement.
