The leader of the New Democratic Party of Social Democrats of Canada, Jagmeet Singh, said that he intends to start a vote of confidence in the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in early 2025. Reuters wrote this on Friday, December 20.
“Whoever leads the Liberal Party, this government’s time is up. We will deliver a clear vote of no confidence in the next sitting of the House of Commons,” Singh said.
The leader of the Bloc Québécois, the larger opposition party, vowed to support the measure and said “there is no scenario in which Trudeau survives.”
If all opposition parties support the measure, Trudeau will step down after more than nine years as prime minister. There will also be an election.
The media indicate that Trudeau, the leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, leads a minority government: his party owns 153 seats out of 338 in the House of Commons. The party needs the consent of other parliamentary forces to carry out its policies, and so far the New Democratic Party has supported the Liberals.
Earlier, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned due to conflicts with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Recall that Trump said that Canada and Mexico could join the United States instead of receiving subsidies.
