Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has died following an assassination attempt. This was announced by NHK TV channel on Friday, July 8th.

“Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has died. He was shot during a speech on Friday in the city of Nara, near Kyoto,” the report said.

The murder suspect was arrested. It was Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, a Nara resident who served in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in the mid-2000s.

It will be recalled, today in the city of Nara, 67-year-old Shinzo Abe was shot while speaking at an election event in support of the Liberal Democratic Party, of which he was the leader at the time. Abe lost consciousness and was hospitalized with severe injuries.


Shinzo Abe was first installed in 2006 as Japan’s youngest prime minister since World War II. He served two terms as prime minister and remained in the highest government office for the longest continuous term in Japanese history. In 2020, he retired due to poor health.
