As a result of the investigation, the border guards learned that the driver was transporting four foreigners – two 22-year-olds, a 23-year-old and a 43-year-old Indian citizen.
By law, Indians were not allowed to leave Latvia while their asylum applications were pending.
A common procedure is when migrants entering the EU from Belarus ask for asylum in the first EU country, and after the procedures start, they look for an opportunity to escape to Western Europe. Latvia and Lithuania are only transit states for illegal immigrants.
