For now, the risk of further spread of the virus remains low, as mpox is only transmitted through close physical contact.
In the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, mpox virus infection has been confirmed in a person who recently returned from Africa. The infection spread to three other people, including two children. All members of this family are in quarantine. Bild reported this on Monday, December 16.
According to the local administration, the virus belongs to the new clade 1b strain. Among the contact persons are the children’s classmates and colleagues of the infected person. All of them have been notified about the symptoms of the disease and are required to immediately inform the health authorities if any signs of infection are found. However, no quarantine was introduced for them.
The administration’s spokesperson stressed that the risk of further spread of the virus remains low, as mpox is only transmitted through close physical contact. Due to confidentiality, the place of residence of those infected has not been disclosed.
The previous case of monkeypox infection in Germany was recorded in the autumn of this year: the virus was detected in a man from Cologne who returned from Africa. Experts note that the likelihood of a large-scale epidemic in Europe remains low.
It will be remembered that on August 14, the WHO announced that the rapid spread of monkeypox in African countries is a global health emergency.
In September, India’s Ministry of Health confirmed a case of clade 1b smallpox. This is the first case of the new strain in South Asia.
