The Norwegian government will allocate 2.7 billion kroner ($242 million) to strengthen the Ukrainian fleet and contain Russian naval forces in the Black Sea. This is what Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stere said, Reuters reports.
“It is necessary to protect the population and infrastructure of Ukraine from the attacks of the Russian Black Sea Fleet,” he said, adding that it is also important to protect the export of grain and other products by sea, which carries of important income in Ukraine.
Much of the funding will go towards innovation and autonomy under the Maritime Capability Coalition, launched by Norway and Britain last year to make Ukraine’s navy more compatible with Western allies.
Support includes donations from the Norwegian Armed Forces, as well as military equipment purchased from industry for subsequent donation.
The funds will also be used for mine clearance operations and training of Ukrainian soldiers.
Earlier, the First Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Ivan Gavrilyuk, held talks with the delegation of the Kingdom of Norway, discussing the situation at the front, the needs of the Ukrainian air defense and prospects for cooperation in the production of weapons .
