Syrian authorities sent millions of dollars and euros in cash to Russia while ousted President Bashar al-Assad was still in power. The Financial Times reported this with reference to confidential documents.
The transition took place in 2018–2019. The funds belong to the Central Bank of Syria.
During this period, the country experienced a severe shortage of foreign currency.
Despite this, the Assad government brought the equivalent of $250 million in cash in dollars and euros to Moscow’s Vnukovo airport – $100 and €500 bills weighing nearly two tons.
From March 2018 to September 2019, a total of 21 flights carrying foreign currency were conducted.
The Assad family has secretly acquired assets from Russia, including luxury real estate. They bought at least 19 luxury apartments in the elite area of Moscow City for a total cost of at least $40 million.
As you know, on December 8, rebel forces in Damascus declared the capital “free” from Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia. The day before, an interim prime minister was appointed in Syria.
