United Nations Secretary General, António Guterressaid on Tuesday that the reconstruction of Ukraine “is a long journey” that must begin now, and supported international efforts to rebuild the country after the Russian invasion.

“We are preparing the ground for the reconstruction and repair of critical infrastructure. It’s a long way to go, but it needs to start now,” Guterres said in a video broadcast at the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference, which is taking place these days in Lugano, Switzerland.

In this way, United Nations committed to supporting the government Ukraine to save lives, strengthen relief efforts, advance the Development and Recovery Plan, and protect hard-won gains towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

Same way, Guterres He warned that rebuilding destroyed homes, schools, hospitals and other critical infrastructure “will take years.”

“Working closely with the government of Ukraine and more than 300 local civil society partners and international non-governmental organizations, the United Nations is providing essential and life-saving assistance to almost 9 million people. Our goal is to reach millions more in the coming months,” said the UN Secretary General.

In this sense, he recalled that 90 percent of Ukrainians are at risk of falling below the poverty line, and in connection with this problem, he asks the international community to support the people of Ukraine “in these dark days.”

Ukraine proposes to use Russian assets to finance reconstruction

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmygal proposed using Russian assets seized by Western partners to finance the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.

At an event in Lugano, Switzerland, where he presented a draft plan for the reconstruction of Ukraine, which included such personalities as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Shmyhal provided funding for the reconstruction of the country with part of the assets seized from Russia as an alternative.

” Russian authorities unleashed this bloody war. They caused this massive destruction and must be held accountable for it (…) Russia’s frozen assets, according to various estimates, range from 285 to 480 billion euros,” the Prime Minister of Ukraine said, UNIAN news agency reported.

The move, however, did not fully convince experts, who warned that seizing Russian assets in this way was “legally difficult.”
