Ministry of Health care Colombia recommended the use of masks indoors “in the face of rising COVID-19 cases” due to the omicron sub-option after its use was no longer mandatory as of May 1.
” Ministry of Health care makes a strong recommendation for the prudent use of face masks in closed, poorly ventilated places, when crowded or when visiting at-risk groups,” said the Deputy Minister of Health and Services. Herman Escobar.
“This is due to the increase in the number of COVID cases that we have seen over the past two to three weeks, as well as the increase in cases of respiratory symptoms due to other viruses that are already emerging,” the Vice Minister said.
Last week, shortened to June 30, there were 23,827 cases of COVID-19, while the previous week saw 19,697 infections.
This increase is due not only to the presence omicron variantwhich is quite contagious, as we have said, fortunately not so much, but because of the interactions that we have presented in recent days,” added the deputy minister.
In line with the increase in cases, “there has been a slight increase in deaths over the past two weeks,” Escobar said, as during the week of June 17-23 Ministry of Health care reported 52 deaths, up from 100 last week.
The official assured that “fortunately, omicron variant this is a less severe variant than the others” but also requires vaccination.
Vaccination in Colombia

The ministry recalled that even though the health emergency was lifted on June 30, it continues to monitor the situation “minute by minute” and hopes that the recommendation to wear face masks, which is not yet mandatory, will be sufficient, although other measures will be taken “if necessary”.
