Europe must play a major role in protecting and supporting Ukraine, the US President believes.
US President-elect Donald Trump said at a meeting in Paris on December 7 that Europe will be forced to bear the brunt of its promises to support Ukraine and the upcoming ceasefire. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing its sources.
Sources say that Trump does not support Ukraine’s membership in NATO, but wants to see a “strong, well-armed Ukraine” after the cessation of hostilities.
In addition, he believes that Europe should play a major role in protecting and supporting Ukraine and that he wants the ceasefire to be controlled by European troops present in Ukraine. Trump ruled out the presence of US troops in Ukraine.
The US leader-elect also called on the Europeans to do more to pressure China to put pressure on Russia to end the large-scale invasion.
Those around the future US president confirmed that he does not yet have a specific plan for Ukraine, and that he will make important decisions after he forms a national security team and conducts further negotiations with allies and, possibly, to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
As you know, discussions about the deployment of European troops on Ukrainian territory were first publicly announced by French President Emmanuel Macron in early 2024.
Earlier, the media wrote that Emmanuel Macron will meet in Warsaw with the Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk to discuss the deployment of peacekeeping forces after the war in Ukraine.
