Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that he unsuccessfully proposed establishing a Christmas truce and a large-scale prisoner exchange between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
He wrote about this today, December 11, on his page on the social network X, reacting to criticism from Vladimir Zelensky of his call to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
At the end of the Hungarian EU Presidency, we made renewed efforts to achieve peace. We proposed a Christmas truce and a large-scale prisoner exchange. It is sad that President Zelensky correctly rejected and ruled this out today. We did everything we could! – said Orban.
At the same time, Orban did not indicate whether he had approached Putin with a similar proposal.
Earlier today, Orban said he had an hour-long conversation with Putin and said that these are “the most dangerous weeks of the war between Russia and Ukraine.” Reacting to this, Zelensky on his page on the social network expressed the hope that Orban “will not at least call Assad on the phone in Moscow to listen to his hour-long lectures.”
It is absolutely clear that achieving real peace and guaranteed security requires American determination, European unity and the determination of all partners to comply with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
