The deceased minister was the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, the late founder of the notorious Haqqani Network.
The Minister for Refugees of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, was killed in a suicide bombing in Kabul on Wednesday, December 11. The official was killed along with at least four of his colleagues. This was reported by CBS News, citing two local officials.
The attacker posed as a visitor with a physical deformity and then “approached Haqqani with an explosive when the minister left his office to pray.”
The Taliban’s chief spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, confirmed Haqqani’s death in the attack and blamed the attack on a local branch of the Islamic State group (ISIS).
The minister is the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, the late founder of the notorious Haqqani Network, an armed group the US blames for many deadly attacks during the 20-year war in Afghanistan. Jalaluddin Haqqani’s son Sirajuddin is now Afghanistan’s interior minister.
The death of Khalil Haqqani is a major blow to the Taliban, and especially to the Haqqani Network, which the US government has designated as a terrorist organization.
The regional ISIS cell remains active in Afghanistan and regularly carries out attacks against Taliban regime officials and civilians and foreigners. Their attacks are largely seen as an attempt to weaken the Taliban’s power.
Let’s remember that last year a powerful explosion occurred near the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan in Kabul.
