The President of Georgia appealed to Europe over the protests in Tbilisi and called on politicians to respond to the repression launched by the pro-Russian government of Georgia against supporters of European integration among ordinary citizens.

The United States is ready to use “any tool,” including sanctions, against Georgian authorities trying to suppress protests in the country. This was announced on Tuesday, December 10, by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.

In particular, at a briefing for journalists, he was asked whether the office of the current president will have time to “punish the officials of Georgia, as Ukraine did.”

“We will use all the tools at our disposal to hold Georgia accountable for these actions, including by imposing personal sanctions,” Miller responded.

However, a State Department representative declined to say what specific sanctions would be imposed and on whom they would be imposed.

Miller noted that any restrictions on sanctions are within the purview of the US Treasury Department. Accordingly, they will make official statements in this regard.

We remind you that Zelensky signed a decree implementing the decision of the National Security and Defense Council to impose sanctions against the founder of the Georgian Dream party Bidzina Ivanishvili and 19 of his accomplices. The sanctions will be in effect for 10 years.

As you know, on November 28, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced that Georgia was rejecting EU accession negotiations until 2028. This caused widespread protests. The police used tear gas and water cannons against the protesters.
