Russian authorities consider people with dual citizenship exclusively as citizens of the Russian Federation and, as a rule, refuse them to receive consular assistance from foreign diplomatic missions.
The German Embassy in Moscow learned of the detention of a German citizen in Russia on the morning of December 10. The German Foreign Ministry was informed about this in response to a request from DW.
Currently, diplomatic mission officials are taking steps to obtain consular access this year.
The German Foreign Ministry emphasized that the Russian authorities consider people with dual citizenship exclusively as citizens of the Russian Federation and, as a rule, refuse them to receive consular assistance from foreign diplomatic missions.
“Regardless of the specific case: the risk of arrest in Russia is very high, including for German citizens. We have warned about this for a long time in our bulletins on issues related to travel and security,” recalled the department.
Earlier, the FSB of the Russian Federation announced the detention in Nizhny Novgorod of a 21-year-old citizen of Russia and Germany, who was suspected of preparing an explosion on the railway tracks.
This is the second such incident in recent weeks. In November, German citizen Nikolai Gaiduk was detained in Russia, having entered Russia from Poland allegedly for the purpose of organizing sabotage at energy facilities.
We remind you that FSB officers detained a resident of the temporarily occupied Sevastopol, who allegedly planned to carry out a terrorist attack near the Balaklava thermal power plant “on instructions from Ukrainian intelligence.”
Earlier, the FSB detained a 22-year-old Ukrainian citizen, a resident of the Kherson region, “on suspicion of working for Ukrainian intelligence.”
