Germany and Austria have indefinitely suspended processing asylum applications from Syrian citizens.
This was reported by Der Spiegel with reference to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.
The department said that the situation in Syria is “confusing” and it is now difficult to predict how it will develop.
The German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has suspended the acceptance and processing of asylum applications from Syrians due to the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria. The relevant process was paused on Monday, December 9, “for further orders.”
According to BAMF, more than 47 thousand applications from Syrian citizens are currently awaiting asylum decisions. At the same time, a change in the situation in this country will not in any way affect the decisions already made, writes Der Spiegel.
There is already an ongoing political debate about the Syrians in Germany, which several years ago advocated for the Greens to bring Syrian refugees home.
In Austria, a corresponding measure was introduced on the instructions of Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer.
