Syrian opposition leaders reportedly ensured the security of Russian military bases and diplomatic institutions in Syria.
Russian state agency TASS reported that deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family are in Moscow and that Russia has granted them asylum.
“Assad and his family members arrived in Moscow Russia, based on humanitarian considerations, gave them asylum,” said TASS, citing a source in the Kremlin.
A Kremlin source also told TASS that Syrian opposition leaders have assured the security of Russian military bases and diplomatic institutions in Syria. At the same time, it was reported that not only the flag, but also the sign with the name of the diplomatic mission was removed from the building of the Syrian Embassy in the Russian Federation.
Let’s recall that on the morning of December 8, rebel forces in Damascus declared the capital “free” from longtime leader Bashar al-Assad. They said government institutions would remain under the administration of the former prime minister until the formal transfer of power.
On Sunday afternoon, the Russian Foreign Ministry, an ally of the Syrian regime, issued a statement saying that Assad had left the presidency and Syria.
