Moscow will “in every possible way” oppose efforts to change the situation on the ground in Syria, the Russian Foreign Minister said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday that it was unacceptable to allow the rebels to control Syrian lands. Reuters reported this on Sunday, December 8.
“It is unacceptable to allow a terrorist group to control lands contrary to agreements,” Lavrov said at a political forum in the Qatari capital after a meeting with the foreign ministers of Turkey and Iran.
Russia maintains a military presence in Syria, including a naval base and air bases in the cities of Tartus and Latakia.
“… we are helping the Syrian army to counter terrorist attacks,” Lavrov said.
Lavrov, whose country is fighting a war against Ukraine, was asked if he believed Assad could stay and about the future of Russian bases in Syria. He said he was “not in the business of guessing.”
He also added that Moscow will oppose, in his words, “in all possible ways,” efforts to change the situation on the ground in Syria.
Let us recall that the command of the Syrian army informed the officials that the reign of Bashar al-Assad has ended.
Earlier, the media reported that the rebels entered the Syrian capital, Damascus, and took control of the international airport and administrative buildings in various areas of the city.
Following this, Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Ghazi al-Jalali said he was ready to cooperate with any leadership elected by the Syrian people and take all necessary steps for the transfer of power.
