On Friday, the rebel alliance took full control of the city of Deir el-Zor, the main city in eastern Syria and the main border crossing into Iraq.
On Friday, December 6, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) troops took control of the main city in eastern Syria, Deir ez-Zor, Reuters reports. It is the third major city in a week that President Bashar al-Assad’s government forces have lost control of.
It was noted that in this way, the SDF effectively took control of the vast eastern Syrian desert in two swift movements.
According to Reuters, the Syrian military and Iranian-backed Iraqis withdrew from Deir ez-Zor before the SDF entered.
The Syrian Democratic Forces are also advancing towards another city in the east of the country, Abu Kamal, and this may last for 24 hours, a source in the Iraqi security services agency said.
The SDF advance, Reuters said, came against reports of an offensive by Islamist militants led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group in the city of Homs in central western Syria. Earlier, the militants captured Aleppo and Hama as part of the biggest offensive in recent years against the positions of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s troops.
It was previously reported that the rebels are only a few kilometers from the important hub city of Homs, where the Russian airbase is located.
