Bashar al-Assad went to Tehran for negotiations with Iran’s religious leader Ali Khamenei.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has left the country’s capital Damascus. This was reported by Turkish publications Milliyet and Son Dakika on Saturday, December 7.
“After the opposition literally arrived at the door of Damascus, Assad left the country with his family,” the media reported, citing Hassan Ibrahim, a representative of the Global Arab Net news service.
Assad is said to have decided to leave Damascus after losing Russian support. He went to Tehran for talks with Iran’s religious leader Ali Khamenei.
The previous day, the media reported that units of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) captured the main city in eastern Syria – Deir ez-Zor. It is the third major city in a week that Assad’s forces have lost control of.
Media also say Iran has begun evacuating its military personnel, as well as some diplomats and civilians from Syria.
