The war in Ukraine is becoming the main issue of the campaign for early elections in Germany, which will take place in February next year.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed confidence in the possibility of a joint strategy towards Ukraine after discussing the issue with US President-elect Donald Trump. Reuters reported this on Saturday, December 7.
“I am confident that we can develop a common strategy for Ukraine. My guiding principle remains that nothing can be decided without giving the Ukrainians their say,” he said.
He added that he had spoken with the future US president “in detail” and that his team was in direct contact with Trump’s security advisers.
The agency said Ukraine is becoming a key issue in the election campaign for early elections in Germany, which will be held in February.
Scholz’s main rival, conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz, said Germany should send Taurus cruise missiles. Scholz opposed such a move, saying it could lead to an escalation of the war. At the same time, Scholz announced new military aid to Ukraine during a rare visit to Kyiv, which he said sent a message to Vladimir Putin that Berlin would support Kyiv as long as the war was necessary.
In this regard, Merz also announced a visit to Ukraine “in the coming days.”
