The alliance is now waiting “for the new US administration to start working,” said Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze.
Western allies are now waiting for the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump to build on the matter of inviting Ukraine to NATO. This is an aspect that is discussed or kept quiet in the Alliance, but “it is a reality,” Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze said in Brussels, Sky News reports.
“In general, we – as political leaders – agreed that Ukraine will become a member of NATO. The question is under what conditions, when, and, obviously, here the Alliance should unite. All members of NATO is now waiting for the new US administration to work. This is one of the aspects that is discussed or not, but this is the reality,” she emphasized.
The head of the Latvian Foreign Ministry, who is a former senior NATO official, said the battle-hardened Ukrainian army would be an important contribution to the Alliance. However, “some countries are not comfortable inviting a state to war with NATO.”
Earlier, the media reported that the United States, Germany and Hungary were still opposed to the invitation to Ukraine.
