US President Joe Biden’s son Hunter, after being pardoned by his father, announced his intention to dedicate his life to helping people with addiction.
Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter was motivated by a desire to protect him from further persecution by political opponents. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said this on Monday, December 2.
The spokesman said Joe Biden made this decision because he expected further prosecution by Republicans and President-elect Trump.
“One of the reasons why the president signed the pardon for his son is because it seems that his political opponents will not give up on him and will continue to persecute him. That is why the president took this step,” Jean-Pierre said .
He added that the current president does not consider the Justice Department, which filed criminal charges against his son for illegal acquisition and possession of weapons in 2018, to be politicized.
“He believes in the Department of Justice, but he also believes that his son was chosen politically, so he made this decision,” added Jean-Pierre.
Over the weekend, the President and Hunter Biden were in Nantucket, Massachusetts, to spend Thanksgiving with family; they also had lunch together at a local restaurant.
The speaker also recalled that this was not the first time the US president pardoned a family member: Bill Clinton pardoned his half-brother Roger, and Donald Trump pardoned his son’s father-in-law Charles Kushner.
US President-elect Donald Trump called the pardon of outgoing White House chief Joe Biden’s son Gunther an “abuse” and a “violation of justice.”
Earlier, American President Joe Biden signed a document pardoning his son, although the head of the White House had previously claimed that he would not do so. Hunter Biden was acquitted as a defendant on charges of weapons violations and tax evasion. The verdict in the first case is expected on December 12, in the second – on December 16.
