Georgian Dream’s anti-democratic actions violated the fundamental principles of the strategic partnership between the United States and Georgia, the State Department said.
The United States has suspended its strategic partnership with Georgia over Tbilisi’s decision to delay the EU accession process and the use of force against protesters. This was stated in a statement by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, published on the department’s website on Saturday, November 30.
It is indicated that the ruling Georgian Dream party’s decision to suspend the country’s entry into the EU contradicts the criteria stated in its constitution regarding full integration with the European Union and NATO. Thus, the current authorities rejected the possibility of closer relations with Europe and made Georgia more vulnerable to the Kremlin.
The statement emphasizes that the majority of Georgian people support European integration.
“The United States condemns the excessive use of police force against citizens seeking to exercise their rights to freedom of assembly and expression, including the freedom to peacefully protest.
In this regard, a representative of the State Department announced the suspension of the US strategic partnership with Georgia.
“The Georgian Dream’s anti-democratic actions violated the fundamental principles of the US-Georgia strategic partnership, which is based on shared values and commitment to democracy, rule of law, civil society, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and anti-corruption efforts As a result, the United States has suspended this mechanism,” the statement said.
Miller called on the Georgian authorities to return to the Euro-Atlantic path, clearly investigate all violations of parliamentary elections and remove anti-democratic laws that restrict freedom of assembly and expression.
As you know, on November 28, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced that the country is abandoning EU accession negotiations until 2028.
This caused another wave of anger in the society. New large-scale protests began in Tbilisi.
