The European Commission turned to TikTok due to suspicions of influence on the elections in Romania.
In particular, the European Commission is asking TikTok to detail how the social network has reduced the risk of inauthentic or automated use of its service, and to list the risks arising from its system of recommended content.
The appeal is due to the fact that in Romania they suspect that the winner of the first round of presidential elections, pro-Russian far-right politician Kelin Georgescu, illegally used TikTok to promote his campaign.
Lacking party support, Georgescu’s campaign relied heavily on TikTok, where his account had 1.6 million likes and where he posted videos of himself attending church, doing judo, running on the track and speaking on podcasts.
Earlier, the Constitutional Court of Romania postponed until December 2 the decision to annul the results of the first round of the presidential elections. Previously, he decided to list the votes.
The Prime Minister of Romania withdrew from the presidential elections, despite the court’s decision to recount the votes after the first round.
Let us recall that the first place in the 1st round was taken by the far-right politician Kelin Georgescu (22.94%), the second by the pro-European candidate Elena Lasconi (19.18%), and the third by the Prime Minister Marcel Ciolaku (19.15%). .
The recount of ballots continues due to accusations of fraud regarding Lasconi’s votes by the eliminated candidate.
