Germany will provide Ukraine with two additional IRIS-T air defense systems by the end of the year, the country’s Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock announced on Tuesday.
IRIS-T is a missile system capable of shooting down airplanes, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles.
The delivery of two new IRIS-T systems is part of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s plan announced in September for 17 such systems.
Earlier, Voice of America quoted German Major General Christian Freuding, head of the Bundeswehr Situation Center regarding Ukraine, as promising that IRIS-T would arrive in Ukraine “by Christmas.”
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Germany has provided Ukraine with more than $38.85 billion in aid, Baerbock said, pointing out that this aid is not only for the defense of Ukraine, but also for our own defense and peace.
