Sheinbaum is a hardcore fan of leftist ideology, familiar with radical student protest movements, and unwilling to make concessions to Trump.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she may respond to US President-elect Donald Trump with tariffs of her own. So, he responded with his threats to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican goods if the country did not stop the flow of drugs and migrants across the border. The Associated Press writes about it on Tuesday, November 26.
“One tariff will be followed by another in response, and so on, until it jeopardizes business as usual,” Sheinbaum said, noting that American automakers have factories on both sides of the border.
“This is unacceptable and will lead to inflation and job losses in Mexico and the United States. If tariffs increase, who will be hurt? General Motors,” Sheinbaum added.
He said Mexico has done a lot to stem the flow of migrants, noting that “migrant caravans no longer reach the border.”
Sheinbaum said Mexico has suffered from an influx of weapons smuggled from the United States and added that the flow of drugs “is a public health and consumption problem in the United States.”
The Mexican president also criticized US spending on weapons, saying the money should be spent in the region to address migration.
“Sheinbaum’s response suggests that Trump is facing a different Mexican president than the one he was used to in his first term,” the publication concluded.
US President-elect Donald Trump aims to raise customs tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada and China on his first day in the White House.
