The record sales of abortion drugs come amid Putin’s regular calls to increase the birth rate.
In 2023, a record number of drugs used for emergency contraception and medical abortion have been sold in Russia over the past five years. Russian media reported it.
The growth in sales of the drug Mifepristone is especially noticeable. Within five years, its sales increased 1.6-3 times, depending on the dose. So, last year, 28 thousand packages of medicine in a dose of 50 mg and 368 thousand packages in a dose of 200 mg, which are used for medical abortion, were sold. This is 2.5 and 1.6 times higher than in 2019.
A similar drug in a dose of 10 mg, used for emergency contraception, also showed growth: sales increased from 281.6 thousand packages in 2019 to 899 thousand in 2023, more than tripling.
Another record holder is Misoprostol, which is used in conjunction with Mifepristone to terminate early pregnancy. In 2019, 240.3 thousand packages of this medicine were sold, and in 2023 – there will be 578.7 thousand packages, which is 2.4 times more.
Levonorgestrel, used for emergency and routine contraception, also showed an increase. Its sales in 2023 will reach nearly 3 million packages, which is 2.3 times more than in 2019.
The record sales of abortion drugs come amid Putin’s regular calls to increase the birth rate. A year ago, he called on Russians to “revive the tradition” of having seven or eight children to cope with the demographic challenges the country faced after nearly a quarter century of his rule.
Let’s remember that last year Russian dictator Vladimir Putin called on Russians to increase the birth rate. And in May of this year, he requested that the total fertility rate increase to 1.6 in 2030, and to 1.8 in 2036.
Meanwhile, the losses of the Russian army in Ukraine have exceeded 733,000 people, the General Staff reports.
