Beijing is concerned that Russia’s influence could encourage North Korea to take actions that are not in China’s interests.
Beijing is increasingly concerned about Russia’s growing ties to North Korea. US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said this at a seminar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, reports The Guardian.
The official noted that Washington has reached this point of view even though China has not directly criticized Moscow.
“One topic that’s becoming increasingly uncomfortable for Chinese interlocutors is North Korea’s relationship with Russia. In some discussions, it feels like we’re informing them about things they don’t know,” Campbell said. .
He noted that Beijing is concerned that Russia’s persuasion could encourage North Korea to take actions inconsistent with China’s interests.
Beijing may also fear that this “military conspiracy” will help Washington build a network of alliances in East Asia with South Korea and Japan, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
Earlier, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that Russia and the DPRK have the right to independently decide how to develop their relations.
Before this, the Chinese Foreign Ministry refused to comment on the DPRK’s military presence in Russia. During the briefing, journalists unsuccessfully contacted the representative of the Foreign Ministry on this issue three times.
