Polish farmers are threatening to block all checkpoints on the Polish-Ukrainian border after December 10 if the Polish government does not comply with their demands.
This was discussed during negotiations between the protesters and the Minister of Agriculture Czeslaw Sekierski, which took place yesterday, November 24, in Medice at the Polish-Ukrainian border, reports TOK.FM.
Sekersky said yesterday after negotiations that on December 10 he would prepare a response to the protesters’ demands.
In particular, farmers expect the authorities in Warsaw to decisively resist the free trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur association, which includes countries in South America. They fear that a lack of response could lead to an influx of American agricultural products onto the Polish market. They also demand that the government maintain the agricultural tax for farmers in 2024 at the level of last year.
Sekierski said that his ministry, together with the Ministry of Development, is preparing a common, negative position on the agreement between the EU and Mercosur at a government meeting on Tuesday.
The representative of the protesters, the chairman of the “Deceived Village” organization, Roman Kondruv, notes that the protest yesterday was only suspended, and not completely stopped.
We are giving the minister time, and if nothing is done, we will definitely go to the border again. And this will be a massive protest, there will be protests along the entire eastern border,” he said.
