Historian Karol Nawrocki could be a serious rival to Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski.
Opposition party in Poland Law and Justice elected historian Karol Nawrocki as presidential candidate. Euronews reported this on Monday, November 25.
His candidacy was announced during the party congress in Krakow. Navrocki, 41, has headed the Institute of National Remembrance, a government body that maintains archives and conducts research on World War II and communist-era crimes, since 2021. He previously served as director of World War II Museum in Gdańsk, his hometown.
Nawrocki is known for initiating the demolition of monuments honoring Soviet soldiers. The politician is also a novice boxer.
I know Poles and I understand your needs. I am one of you and I want to be your president, because I know and understand: Poland, in order to be, must be great. We must defend Poland, we must defend our values, do not allow our symbols to be removed and our sovereignty limited,” Nawrocki said in his speech.
It was noted that Nawrocki could become a serious political rival of the progressive mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, who was recently nominated as a presidential candidate by the ruling Civic Coalition Donald Tusk. Both candidates have the best chance of making it to the second round of voting.
We remind you that the presidential election in Poland will take place in May 2025. The winning candidate will replace the current head of state Andrzej Duda. If no candidate receives 50% of the vote, a second round of elections will take place in two weeks.
