States that have signed the Rome Convention are obliged to comply with the court’s decision, the EU’s chief diplomat emphasized.
European Union governments cannot choose whether to execute arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). This, in particular, concerns warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant. This is what the EU diplomacy chief, Josep Borrell, said, Reuters reports.
“States that have signed the Rome Convention are obliged to comply with the court’s decision. This is not optional,” the diplomat explained his position.
He noted that the same obligations are mandatory for countries seeking to join the EU.
“It’s interesting that newcomers have obligations that current members don’t,” Borrell concluded.
Earlier, Josep Borrell said that EU countries are obliged to implement the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, because this decision is not just “political.”
The Israeli President called the ISS arrest warrant for Netanyahu and Galant absurd
