The head of the European Parliament, Roberta Mezola, against the backdrop of intensifying Russian attacks on Ukraine, called on Germany to provide Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv as quickly as possible.
This is stated in an interview published by the German newspaper Funke Mediengruppe. Metzola answered affirmatively to the question whether the EU countries, like the United States, are in favor of allowing the use of long-range missiles against targets in Russia, and whether Germany should supply Taurus to Ukraine.
Yes, this is the position of the European Parliament. This demand is widely supported. We’ll see if this leads to a corresponding change of course after the Bundestag elections,” Mezola said.
She noted that perhaps such a change in course will happen earlier, since “there are different positions in the Berlin coalition on the supply of Taurus.”
Metsola noted that Ukrainian soldiers urgently need help and cannot wait endlessly for large-scale military assistance just because elections are being held in some Western country, while in Ukraine people die every day in war.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not support allowing Kyiv to use German weapons to hit targets in Russia. He has stated several times that he is seeking to avoid escalation of the conflict.
Russia’s use of a new missile means escalation should be avoided.
