Canada handed over to Ukraine the latest NASAMS air defense system, promised last year.
Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair stated this in Ottawa, the Ukrinform agency reported.
“I can’t reveal more details about this due to operational security, but we finally had the opportunity to deliver it,” he noted.
According to Blair, the new air defense system “will be a game changer because it will allow Ukrainians to defend their communities.”
Canada announced its intention to transfer the NASAMS air defense system to Ukraine on January 10, 2023. The original agreements stipulated that Canada would reimburse the United States for the full cost of the new NASAMS system, while the United States would enter into a direct contract for the supply of these weapons from Ukraine. This was supposed to allow Canada to bypass the requirement to obtain US permission to re-export NASAMS to Ukraine.
However, the implementation of this project encountered a number of bureaucratic obstacles that slowed down its implementation. In addition, each NASAMS system takes about two years to manufacture.
At the same time, Canada transferred ammunition for NASAMS to Ukraine back in April 2023. This delivery was also announced in January 2023, along with a promise to transfer a new air defense system.
