The European Parliament on Wednesday, November 20, approved all the candidates for positions in the new European Commission, which will be headed by Ursula von der Leyen. This means the European Commission will be able to start work on December 1, Politico reports.
The spokesperson of the parliament told the publication that the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Mezola, called meetings in advance where the final nominations of the commissioners will be approved, to avoid shifting the schedule to next week.
Since September, von der Leyen has carefully selected 26 commissioners (one from each of the EU’s 27 member states; he is the German commissioner) to strengthen his own control over the commission and EU policymaking.
Von der Leyen appointed six executive vice presidents (Kai Kallas from Estonia, Raffaele Fitto from Italy, Roxana Minzata from Romania, Stéphane Sejournet from France, Teresa Ribera from Spain and Henna Virkkunen from Finland).
But the decision to appoint right-wing Fitto as EU minister angered the second-largest group in the European Parliament, the Socialists and Democrats, who accused von der Leyen’s European People’s Party of giving the coveted position to a representative of the group of European conservatives. and reformists.
For more than a week, this issue has been resolved in political disputes between the European People’s Party (EPP) and the Socialists and Democrats.
The publication said that for the first time since 1999, not a single candidate from the country was rejected. This is a step back for the Parliament, which in recent years has tended to restrain the authorities of the European Commission, especially by rejecting nominations.
