In cooperation with the United States, the Dutch government introduced a series of export restrictions that gradually increased and prevented ASML from supplying its most advanced technology to Chinese chip manufacturers.
Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp said trade between China and Russia has a “direct impact” on European security, emphasizing China’s role as a key supplier to Russia’s military. This was reported by Reuters on Monday, November 18.
Before a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Veldkamp said that Chinese companies sell goods that are ultimately used as parts of Russian weapons.
“I raised this issue twice with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and I think as Europeans we all need to do this because China needs to realize this: it has a direct impact on European security,” said by Veldkamp.
In cooperation with the United States, the Dutch government introduced a series of export restrictions that gradually increased and prevented ASML from supplying its most advanced technology to Chinese chip manufacturers.
ASML leads the market for the lithography tools needed to produce computer chip circuitry.
But despite the restrictions, over the past year and a half, China has remained the largest market for ASML and other leading US and Japanese OEMs as Chinese companies expand capacity to produce older chips not subject to restrictions, but which, as before, are suitable for many military purposes.
Veldkamp will discuss with the foreign ministers of other EU countries what to do about China’s support for Russia.
Let’s recall that it was previously known that the European Union was discussing possible sanctions against China due to evidence that it provided Russia with weapons to be used in a full-scale war against Ukraine.
Earlier, the State Department said China was giving Russia “very significant” help to boost the Kremlin’s military machine in exchange for secret Russian military technology for submarines and missiles.
