The Chancellor believes that it would be a bad idea if there is a dialogue between the US president-elect and the head of the Kremlin and no dialogue between Putin and the head of government of an important European state.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz defended his phone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin from criticism from Ukraine and the opposition, ntv reports.
According to Scholz, during the call, it is important to make it clear to Putin that he cannot count on the fact that support for Ukraine from Germany, Europe and many other countries around the world will decrease. He made his statement today before leaving for the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.
He admitted that Putin’s position on the war had not changed.
Scholz gave another argument in defense of his appeal to Moscow: he considers it a bad idea if there is a dialogue between the elected US president and the head of the Kremlin, and there is no dialogue between Putin and the head of government of an important European state.
“We must have no illusions and be naive. Russia and its president started this war… they are willing to risk resources, including their own people, to carry out a plan to occupy Ukraine, take away its sovereignty and its democracy. We cannot allow this and we will not allow it. Therefore, it is important to make it clear today that we will not stop our support in the future,” said Scholz.
“No decision will be made behind the back of Ukraine,” added the German chancellor.
Let’s remember that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau supported the decision of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to talk directly with Putin, saying that the end of the war requires some contact with the Russian leader.
