This month, Ukraine and the United States confirmed the participation of North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russia in the western border region of Kursk.
Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya made a surprise visit to Ukraine for negotiations with officials. Kyodo wrote this on Saturday, November 16.
“This visit is intended to demonstrate Tokyo’s strong support for Kyiv in its resistance to Russian military aggression, which now includes North Korean troops,” the statement said.
It is indicated that the minister arrived in Ukraine by train from Poland and plans to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrei Sibiga and, presumably, President Vladimir Zelensky.
Japan, along with the United States and other G7 members, has supported Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, which imposed economic sanctions on Russia, including asset freezes and export ban.
The last visit of the Japanese Foreign Minister to Ukraine took place in January of this year, when Yoko Kamikawa visited the country. Ishiba’s predecessor, Fumio Kishida, made a surprise visit to Ukraine in March.
Japan will allocate more than $3 billion as part of a $50 billion loan from the G7 countries to Ukraine, to be repaid from the fixed assets of the Russian Central Bank.
The United States, Japan and South Korea will conduct large-scale military exercises Freedom Edge.
