Nearly 40 members of the British government have called on the prime minister to resign. He also lost the trust of most MPs from the ruling Conservative Party.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday, July 6, told Cabinet members, urging him to resign, that he would not leave his post, Sky News reports.
“The prime minister’s job is to lead the country through difficult times,” Johnson said.
Prior to that, Johnson had lost the trust of a majority of MPs from the ruling Conservative Party. This was said by Labor Party MP Meg Hillier.
Only one of 150 Conservatives on the Conservative Party’s so -called 1922 Committee, with the power to initiate the prime minister’s resignation, expressed support for Johnson at the last meeting.
It was also reported that the 1922 Committee next Monday would elect a new leader and even then discuss the change in rules on announcing a vote of no confidence.
The last time they tried to express no confidence in Johnson was on June 6, after which he retained his position and received “immunity”. It is hoped that next week the 1922 Committee may shorten this immunity.
Recall that in less than a day nearly four dozen members of the British government wrote a letter of resignation.
The layoffs came amid a scandal that erupted last week when it was reported that the deputy chief organizer of the ruling Conservative Party in the House of Commons, Chris Pincher, had staged a drunken riot at London’s elite Conservative club Carlton in Piccadilly. Two men molested the drunk 52-year-old politician. He did not deny it and resigned. At the same time, it emerged that Johnson, when Pincher was assigned, knew he had previously been suspected of harassment. The prime minister apologized to voters.
Poll: Nearly 70% of Britons support Johnson’s resignation
