Germany has banned its ports from accepting tankers with Russian gas.
As reported in the Financial Times, the government said the order was issued to protect the country’s “overriding public interests” and called on the operator to “refuse to supply LNG from Russia for further communications.”
In its letter, the German ministry said that if these supplies were allowed, the LNG terminal would violate the very reason for its creation – to make Germany and the EU as a whole “independent” of gas supplies from abroad.
Germany is taking steps to reduce its dependence on Russia. This is mainly due to the creation of LNG terminals, which will allow gas to be supplied to Germany by sea. According to the ministry, these efforts will be in vain if ports can still accept shipments of Russian gas.
