For the first time in its history, the European Union has approved support for joint defense procurement among its member states. In particular, they plan to purchase missiles and ammunition, some of which will be sent to Ukraine.
The total budget of the program is 300 million euros, respectively, each of the areas of funding will receive 60 million euros. The five selected projects represent a total procurement value exceeding €11 billion. These projects are implemented within the framework of the European Instrument for Strengthening the Defense Industry through Joint Procurement (EDIRPA).
Two projects concern the joint purchase of Mistral and IRIS-T SLM air defense systems, two more 155 mm ammunition, and the fifth – armored personnel carriers. Their total cost exceeds 11 billion euros, the European Commission says.
EU countries are pursuing two projects to strengthen common air and missile defense capabilities.
The Mistral project supports the joint procurement by nine member countries of the air defense systems of the same name.
Another project is JAMIE (Joint Air and Missile Defense Initiative in Europe). It provides for the joint purchase by six Union member countries of IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense systems.
EDIRPA also finances the purchase of Patria 6×6 armored personnel carriers for the Armed Forces of Finland, Latvia, Estonia and Denmark.
Two other projects support joint procurement of different types of 155 mm artillery ammunition, within the framework of the “CPoA 155 mm” and “HE 155 mm” projects.
