The Ukrainian Armed Forces introduced a heavy-duty Soviet cannon into battle near Toretsk.
In the Toretsky direction, where the Ukrainian Defense Forces are trying to contain the Russian offensive, a heavy-duty self-propelled artillery unit 2S7 “Pion” weighing 60 tons with a barrel of 12 m was recently brought into battle. This was reported by BILD correspondent Bjorn Stritzel, who visited the Ukrainian positions.
It is noted that this is the heaviest operating gun in the world. It was developed in the USSR in the 1960s to destroy enemy concrete fortifications. This self-propelled gun fires 203 mm shells, each of which weighs 100 kg. In the spring of 2022, the Ukrainian Armed Forces quickly used up this ammunition from Soviet reserves, so the Pion was not used for a long time.
However, as BILD writes, the Ukrainians have found a solution – they load this gun with American shells made for the M110 and M115 in the 1950s and 1960s.
Stritzel writes that Ukrainian artillerymen launch the Pion even before the order is received, because this machine must reach operating temperature.
As soon as the order is given, the gunners run out of cover and move the Peony into a firing position. A folding coulter plate extends and rests on the ground to absorb the strongest recoil. When “Peony” fires, the whole earth around shakes, the journalist notes.
Let us recall that in October it became known that the first towed howitzer “Bogdana-B” had already been built in Ukraine. A corresponding photo was published online, and experts identified this artillery system as the gun part of a 155-mm self-propelled artillery mount 2S22 “Bogdan”.
