Ukrainian law enforcement officials have repeatedly reported cases of executions of Ukrainian military personnel captured by the Russians.
The killing of Ukrainian prisoners of war was a deliberate tactic by Russia to scare its own soldiers into surrender. Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets said this on Tuesday, November 12, in a commentary on Radio Liberty.
“The Russians do this, first of all, to “tie up” the Russian soldiers, so that they do not surrender, so that they understand that they are war criminals. If they kill prisoners of war in Ukraine, then if they surrender, telling them they will do the same thing to them,” the official said.
Also, according to the Ombudsman, Russia is thus trying to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of the current system of international humanitarian law.
“The Russians made the tactic of destroying the current international system of international humanitarian law, showing that it does not exist, and during these changes they will certainly promote their own interests permanent member countries of UN Security Council to the countries that support the Russian Federation and this is very dangerous for all of us,” he emphasized.
Lubinets added that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the UN inform about the cases of killing Ukrainian prisoners of war, “so that the issues of execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war are considered in highest level in the UN General Assembly , again with legal consequences for the Russian Federation.”
“Perhaps we need to introduce separate lists of sanctions against the Russians who do this. I really want the international partners to understand in the future that only drastic economic sanctions can stop Russia’s aggression, you mo, is not working and is getting worse every day,” the ombudsman noted.
We remind you that law enforcement officials are investigating 49 criminal proceedings related to the killing of 124 prisoners of war on the battlefield.
Earlier, in the Kursk region, Ukrainian fighters destroyed an attack group from a Russian brigade involved in the killing of Ukrainian prisoners.
We remind you that the identity of a Russian war criminal who participated in torturing civilians during the occupation of part of the territory of the Kyiv region has been established. We are talking about a 24-year-old soldier of the 14th separate special forces brigade of the main director of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (GRU), Alexander Tamryan.
