At least 35 people were killed and 43 injured when a car drove into a crowd of people playing sports at a stadium in the Chinese city of Zhuhai.
This happened on the evening of Monday, November 11.
According to preliminary data, a 62-year-old driver surnamed Fan drove a small SUV through the barrier and drove into the territory of the sports center, where he hit many people. He tried to flee the scene, but was detained.
When police found Fan, he was in a car and had stabbed himself. The police immediately stopped him and sent him to the hospital. Due to serious injuries to his neck, Fan is currently in a coma. He is still undergoing emergency treatment and cannot be questioned, CNN quotes a police statement as saying.
Police believe the incident may have stemmed from Fan’s dissatisfaction with the way property was divided as a result of his divorce.
Most of the video footage of the event was removed from Chinese social networks. However, footage still available online shows scores of people lying on the ground being administered first aid by paramedics and passersby.
An eyewitness surnamed Chen told Chinese newspaper Caixin that at least six groups had gathered at the stadium for regular walks when the incident occurred. They use specially designed walking paths on the perimeter of the stadium.
The group, which included Chen himself, had just finished the third lap when suddenly a car rushed towards them at high speed, “knocking down a lot of people.”
The car drove throughout the stadium, and people were injured on different parts of the running track – in the east, south, west and north, another eyewitness said.
According to Caixin, many of the victims include elderly people, teenagers and children.
