Trump is expected to name Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida as his secretary of state.
The newly elected US President Donald Trump is considering the candidacy of the Republican Senator from Florida Marco Rubio for the position of head of the US foreign policy department. This was reported by The New York Times, citing sources.
Trump could still change his mind at the last minute, but appears to have settled with Rubio, whom he also considered as his vice presidential pick this year.
Rubio was elected to the Senate in 2010 and has taken a “hawkish” stance on foreign policy, taking tough stances on China, Iran, Venezuela and Cuba in particular.
He initially found himself at odds with Republicans who are more skeptical of foreign intervention, but recently he has also spoken out against Trump on issues such as Russia’s war against Ukraine. He declared that the war had reached a stalemate and “must end.”
We remind you that, according to media reports, Trump has appointed Mike Waltz as his future national security adviser.
Trump previously said he would not invite former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley to join his incoming administration.
