Mike Waltz previously called on Biden to give Ukraine more weapons. However, last month he said those resources are most needed in the Pacific.
The newly elected President of the US, Donald Trump, appointed Mike Waltz as his future national security adviser. Reuters reported this on Monday, November 11, citing two sources familiar with the situation.
Waltz will be responsible for briefing Trump on key national security issues and coordinating with various agencies. The position of national security adviser does not require Senate confirmation.
Waltz previously served as director of defense policy under Defense Secretaries Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates, and was elected to Congress in 2018.
Waltz currently serves as chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee, which oversees military logistics, and also serves on the Select Committee on Intelligence.
Additionally, Mike Waltz is on the Republican China Task Force and argues that the US military is not as prepared in the event of a conflict in the Indo-Pacific.
In a book published this year, Waltz laid out a five-part strategy for avoiding war with China. These include rapidly arming Taiwan, securing allies in the Pacific, and modernizing aircraft and ships.
As for Ukraine, Waltz said his views have changed. After the massive Russian offensive began, he called on the Biden administration to give Kyiv more weapons to help push back Russian troops. But last month he said it was necessary to reconsider US goals in Ukraine.
“Is it good for America if we devote the time, money and resources we need now to the Pacific?”
Waltz also praised Trump for pushing NATO allies to spend more on defense. However, unlike the president-elect, he did not propose that the United States leave the Alliance.
Waltz showed his loyalty to Trump earlier this year when he appeared at Trump’s trial on May 16 in Manhattan, one of the few lawmakers to do so.
Trump previously said he would not invite former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley to join his incoming administration.
