The White House believes that Ukraine’s future lies in NATO, but the priority is to have confidence that Kyiv can win the war.
The current US government’s priority regarding Ukraine is to gain confidence in Kyiv’s ability to win the war, rather than rapid NATO membership. John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications of the US National Security Council, said this on Sunday, November 10, in a telethon.
Kirby made this statement while commenting on President Zelensky’s Victory Plan.
“President Joe Biden made it clear at the last G7 meeting that NATO membership is in Ukraine’s future. There is no doubt about that. We will work with Ukraine on its path to eventual membership in the Alliance. But the very first priority is to make sure that Ukraine can win this war,” Kirby said.
He emphasized that this is why the United States will increase aid to Ukraine and make sure Kyiv has everything it needs to win on the battlefield.
In addition, Kirby said, Washington and Kyiv are working on bilateral security agreements to improve Ukraine’s defense industry and ensure that Ukraine will have the weapons it needs even after the war ends.
Let us recall that the previous German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that a country at war cannot become a member of NATO. Therefore, inviting Ukraine to the Alliance is not on the agenda.
