Soon, Ukrainians will have to add one more to the “two walls” rule. TV BC-50 is a volumetric explosion munition that the Russian Nazis began installing in Shahed-136 type drones for attacks on cities with the aim of killing the civilian population of Ukraine.
In 2024, the Russian Federation began to massively use thermobaric warheads on Shahed-136 type drones, which pose a significantly greater threat when hitting premises, writes Defense Expres.
It has the TV index BC-50, and its existence has been known since April 2024, but right now, in drones attacking Ukrainian cities, such equipment is used most often.
Details about this warhead are known thanks to the hacking of the servers of the Russian “Alabuga” in Tatarstan, where these drones are assembled, and work is also underway to modernize them. According to this information, the TV warhead-50 has a weight of 52.4 kg, which, in addition to the thermobaric effect, also has a fragmentation effect due to 2306 ready-made submunitions in the form of balls with a diameter of 9 mm.
This thermobaric ammunition is a modern type and has a single-stroke action. Note that the previous generation of such ammunition had a two-stroke action – first an explosive substance was sprayed, which filled the space, and then it was detonated.
At the same time, in modern single-stroke ammunition, after the initiator is detonated, the shock wave causes the movement of the thermobaric mixture, which interacts with air and with itself to form a “fire cloud” with a temperature of 2400-2600 °C. It “spreads” over the entire area and creates a shock wave that affects the lungs, hearing organs, etc.
The publication writes that thermobaric ammunition demonstrates maximum effectiveness in confined spaces, since such a cloud can cover several rooms. That is why the Russian Federation uses “shaheds” on TV BC-50 for attacks on cities with the aim of killing the civilian population of Ukraine. And that is why Kyiv is primarily under attack from Russian-Iranian drones.
Because if a thermobaric warhead explodes in a living room, it is much more difficult to hide from its effects. The fire cloud from it will completely fill the entire apartment, while the “two walls” rule can save you from the action of high-explosive fragmentation ammunition.
That is why to this well-known rule that if it is not possible to go to shelter, you must be in a room separated from the street by at least two walls, you can add another rule – close the interior doors. This will create a conditional separation of rooms and, to a certain extent, reduce the spread of the thermobaric mixture throughout the apartment, writes Defense Expres.
